I'm based in Ardrossan opposite Arran and Ailsa Craig, two of the most painted subjects I do. They sell the country and world over.
I seldom use acrylic paints as a finished article. Only as an underpainting before I start with oil paints. It's never a good idea to start painting on a blank canvas. You just can't see the colours emerge properly because a colour is not a colour until it's next to another one.
35 years is my stock answer ! No seriously, I have a painting window of two hours at a time, then I go back to it after this for more sessions if required. I find painting very emotionally draining and I can barely hold a proper conversation immediately after a painting session. I'm not proud of it, but that's what it does to me.
I just adore the texture, the flow and smell of oil paint and its texture when dry is amazing. Acrylic paint fades as it dries in my experience. Oil paint retains its brilliance for years.
